Zuegg through the ages
How early pioneers shaped the face of Merano 2000
It has been 75 years since the first Zuegg hut was built. Since then, much has happened on Merano 2000 - but every step has contributed to where we are today.
1923
THE CABLE CAR
Engineer Luis Zuegg, entrepreneur and cable car pioneer from Lana, built the first cable car from Maia Alta to Avelengo. An important milestone for tourism on Merano 2000.
1950
THE HUT
Luis Zuegg built the first Zuegg hut halfway between Falzeben and Piffinger Köpfl. It comprised a kitchen, a dining room, and a small sun terrace, as well as ten guest beds on the upper floor. A few years later, the descendants exchanged the hut for a nearby alpine cabin, but shortly thereafter the Zuegg family bought it back again.
1957-2020
EVENTFUL HISTORY
In 1957, Mrs. Bacher from the Pustertal valley acquired the property. In 1966, her son Horst and his wife Waltraud took over the hut and ran it for 33 years. In the early years, cooking was done with gas, heating with wood, and laundry by hand. The opening of the cable car from Merano to Merano 2000 in 1968 brought a noticeable boost to the Zuegg Hut and, a few years later, the long-awaited connection to the power grid. In 1973, the hosts adopted five orphaned children from Merano. The youngest of them, Stefan, took over the Zuegg Hut in 1998. Together with his wife Helga and their daughter Lisa, Stefan expanded the hut, which went on to be named the most beautiful hut in South Tyrol twice.

NEW VISION
In the early 2020s, the Bacher family decided to sell the hut. The Reiterer family from Hafling, owners of Chalet Mirabell, took over the Zuegg Hut and developed a new vision for the mountain inn with its eventful history. At the heart of the new project lies the connection between alpine tradition and contemporary architectural design. Three chalets were added to the main building, once again making overnight stays at the Zuegg possible. In the future, the new Chalet Zuegg is intended to be a place of encounter — a retreat that, with its unique location between forests and mountains, inspires people and celebrates the joy of life.
